Each school in England is required to have a governing board (GB).  The GB is responsible for setting the vision for the school and then ensuring that the school works efficiently and effectively towards achieving its vision. It does this by building a thorough knowledge of the school and its community, by both supporting and constructively challenging the school, and by ensuring accountability and compliance. The GB of our school is made up of parent governors, staff governors and other members of the local community who are elected onto the board.

A vacancy has arisen for a second parent governor on Woodside’s. The GB is asking for you to consider whether you would be willing to fill this essential role in your child’s school.

Before you decide if you wish to stand you may want to know a bit more about what is involved. Governors need not be experts in the field of education. What they do need is an interest in the school and in the welfare of our children and the time and willingness to get involved. The skills that you have from your job, volunteering or other interests can be very useful to the governing board.

Governors also need what is known as ‘soft skills’ – the ability to be able to build relationships with a range of people, to be able to work as part of a team, to be able to question, and to make connections between different types of information. All governors are expected to be able to read straightforward budget reports and data on school standards and we can provide training to help you do this.

Our governing body expects governors to:

  • Attend one termly meeting of the full governing body
  • Sit on one sub-committee and attend the meetings which areonce a term
  • Be attached to a subject or faculty area and visit the school informally at least  twice a year
  • Commit to attend training courses, perform additional research as required and take part in monitoring
  • Take part in interviews, disciplinary and permanent exclusion meetings

In return, our governing body commits to

  • provide you with a structured induction
  • provide access to quality training
  • provide you with an experienced governor as a mentor

As Woodside is an academy, you would also be a charity trustee.  Please see the role description for more information on being a trustee.

If you feel you can make this commitment to our school we would welcome your application using our application form.   Please include a short statement (around 300 words) explaining why you wish to take up this role and what you would bring to our dedicated team of Governors.  Parent governors are elected by the school’s parents and we include your statement on the ballot form which will go to all parents.
